Küçük, sessiz notlarSmall, quiet notes

Üç paragraf, bir fotoğraf, bir düşünce. Bir denemenin ağırlığı olmadan gündelik bilgelik.Three paragraphs, one photograph, one thought. Everyday wisdom, without the weight of an essay.

Bu sabahThis morning

Su ısıtıcısı ve ayazThe kettle and the frost

Bu sabah camın iç yüzünde ayaz vardı, nefes kadar ince. Su ısıtıcısını koydum ve onun yok oluşunu izledim. There was frost on the inside of the window this morning, thin as breath. I put the kettle on and watched it disappear.

Eskiden sabrın bir tür bekleyiş olduğunu düşünürdüm. Şimdi bir tür izlemek olduğunu düşünüyorum — yavaş olanın yanında kalmak, onu geçip gitmek yerine.I used to think patience was a kind of waiting. Now I think it's a kind of watching — staying present for the slow thing instead of hurrying past it.

Ayaz artık gitti. Ama onu gördüm. Bütün mesele buydu. The frost is gone now. But I saw it. That was the whole point.

Bir çiçek için iki dilTwo languages for one flower

Burada yetişen neredeyse her şeyin iki adı var — çocukken öğrendiğim ve yeniden başlayan bir kadın olarak öğrendiğim.I have two words for almost everything that grows here — the one I learned as a child, and the one I learned as a woman starting over.

Bazen önce eski sözcük gelir ve bir an İstanbul'a dönerim. Bazen yenisi. Hangisi olduğuna aldırmayı bıraktım.Sometimes the old word comes first, and I am briefly back in Istanbul. Sometimes the new one. I've stopped minding which.

Bir çiçek ona ne dediğinize aldırmaz. Yalnızca fark edilmeyi ister. Bu, en azından, her dile çevrilir.A flower doesn't care what you call it. It just asks to be noticed. That, at least, translates.

Domateslerin bana öğrettiğiWhat the tomatoes taught me

Yine fazla ektim. Hep öyle yaparım. Fidelerde hiç direnmeyi öğrenemediğim bir tür iyimserlik var.I planted too many, again. I always do. There is a kind of optimism in seedlings that I have never learned to resist.

Şimdi tezgâh dolu ve komşular kapılarında bırakılmış poşetler buluyor. Bir bahçe insanı, istese de istemese de böyle cömert yapar. Now the counter is full and the neighbours are getting bags left on their steps. This is how a garden makes you generous whether you meant to be or not.

Bolluk, meğer, çoğunlukla bir paylaşma meselesiymiş. Bu meseleyle yaşayabilirim.Abundance, it turns out, is mostly a problem of sharing. I can live with that problem.
